2013-2014 Program Information

General Information: Participants will enjoy a variety of therapeutic recreation programs that will support and strengthen cognitive, physical, social and affective skills in a safe, supportive and fun-filled environment. Programs are offered in age appropriate groups and settings. Family members receive support, respite, and the opportunity for family participation in recreational activities.

New participants are provided with a pre-registration assessment and tour prior to beginning program. Limited financial assistance is available to those who qualify. Families are encouraged to call to discuss their financial needs.


Sample Classes listed below. For current offerings, check respective catalogue.

> Sensational Sundays
Children and teens continue to explore and develop their cognitive, emotional and social abilities in a safe, nurturing, and well-staffed environment. Swimming, art, music, games, outdoor play and more.

> Learn to Swim Program
Children will have a formal instructional swim class with close support and encouragement. Must contact the Special Programs office to register.

> School Vacation Camps (Ages 5 21)
Our school vacation camps provide five hours of daytime recreation and socialization including swimming, games, arts/crafts and more. Advance registration is required.

> Seasonal Holiday Camps
Children will enjoy our holiday camps featuring FUN. Roundtrip, door-to-door transportation is available.

> Friday Night Pizza, Movies, & Games
Children along with their brothers, sisters cousins or family friends are invited to join us for an evening of activity that includes: a Pizza dinner with beverages, selected feature movies, board and table games and exercise play time in one of our activity studios. Families may extend the evening by participating in the YWCA Family Swim this evening from 8:15 9:15 pm. With the support of our Aquatics Department, there is no additional fee for participation in Family Swim when you register for the Pizza/Games Program. Advance registration/reservation is required

> Music Lessons: Piano or Guitar
Debbie Moran, Instructor
Thirty-minute individual lessons for children and adults. Group lessons are available by request.

> Individuals with Traumatic Brain Injury (TBI)
Available to persons injured prior to age 22, this is an individualized therapy-based program of fitness, aquatics and social support for people recovering from Traumatic Brain Injury. Participants use the Fitness Center and swimming pool. Please contact or make referrals to Jim Sullivan, program director at ext. 108.

> Fun & Fitness for Adults
Adults aged 17 and over enjoy 4 hours of program designed to support fitness and positive social interaction.  Enhanced by therapeutic recreation principles, planned activities include: fitness, swimming, creative crafts, music and social skill development. Designed for adults still living at home. Those living in group homes should call Jim Sullivan at ext. 108 to explore options for participation.

> Saturday Bowling
Adults can enjoy weekly bowling at White Plains Bowl. Transportation for participants in Fun & Fitness is provided. Special Olympic Competitors must participate in session I (there is no additional charge for SO competitors in session I)

> Special Olympics Training and Competition
The YWCA is an official training site for Westchester-Putnam Special Olympics. Registered adult athletes can train and participate in Special Olympic sanctioned events including: swimming, bowling, track and field and Adapted Games. Athletes are trained by Certified Special Olympic Coaches in each sport. Uniforms and personal training equipment is provided

> Dance the Night Away
DJ, dancing, and refreshments are provided. No charge for staff or parents.

> Friday Bingo & Pizza for Adults
Adults and young adults over the age of 17 years are invited to join us for an evening of activity that includes: a Pizza dinner with beverages, and Bingo Games with prizes awarded to winning participants.
